Roots Rock / Heartland / Bar-Band Americana

This family is roots music with a rock-band engine: guitars, drums, working-class storytelling, open-road imagery, and strong ties to country, blues, gospel, and folk. It can sound barroom loose or arena-sized, but the songs usually want grit, place, and human stakes more than fashion.

History

The post-psychedelic back-to-basics turn, The Band and CCR, heartland rock, and later Americana all shaped this family. Springsteen, Petty, Mellencamp, Steve Earle, and countless regional bands helped turn roadhouse truth-telling into one of the great recurring idioms of American song.
