Heartland Folk-Rock uses folk-rock songcraft and harmonies to tell stories of American streets, backroads, small towns, and adult disappointment. It is more acoustic-minded and reflection-heavy than bar-band roots rock, but more band-driven than pure singer-songwriter folk.
History
The style formed around writers who wanted Dylan/Byrds-era narrative craft without giving up rock-band momentum. Springsteen, Petty, Mellencamp, and their descendants kept the songs grounded in working lives rather than countercultural abstraction.
