Rock built around extended, real-time improvisation: songs are launchpads, not fixed objects, stretching into long instrumental exploration where a four-minute studio cut becomes a twenty-minute live odyssey. Hallmarks are segues, dynamic peaks, interlocking guitar-keys interplay, syncopated grooves, and a 'no two shows alike' ethos prized by tape-trading fans.

History

Rooted in the Grateful Dead's mid-'60s San Francisco acid tests and the Allman Brothers' twin-guitar jams, the form crystallized as a touring subculture. Phish's 1980s-'90s rise and Jerry Garcia's 1995 death reshuffled the scene, birthing a sprawling festival circuit. The internet-era tape-trading community and HORDE tour cemented improvisation as the defining value.
