The modern touring-circuit form: bands whose whole identity is the live, never-repeated set — composed songs dissolving into improv, song-to-song segues, and theme jams chased across multi-night runs. Sound spans funky rock grooves, prog-leaning suites and bluegrass touches, all glued by group interplay and a fanbase that trades every show.
History
Phish formed at the University of Vermont in 1983 and became the genre's flagship, drawing massive crowds and a Dead-style taping culture. Widespread Panic, moe., String Cheese Incident and Umphrey's McGee built parallel touring empires through the '90s and 2000s, anchoring festivals like Bonnaroo and the H.O.R.D.E. tour.
