History

Emerged from the 1966 San Francisco scene where the Grateful Dead and Quicksilver Messenger Service turned ballroom sets into open-ended acid journeys. The Dead's 'Live/Dead' (1969) defined the form's improvisational 'feedback' and 'Dark Star' template, echoed in the Allmans' Fillmore-era jams and later carried forward by Phish's exploratory 'Type II' improvisation.
