History
Phish's intricate '80s suites set the prog-jam template, but Chicago's Umphrey's McGee (formed 1997) became its purest expression, codifying improvised 'Jimmy Stewart' sections and metal-tinged complexity. Aqueous, Tauk and the broader 2000s scene carried the composed-meets-improvised approach, beloved on the festival circuit for its musicianship and structural ambition.
