The big-tent, mainstage form built for festival crowds: accessible song hooks that open into crowd-pleasing extended jams, horn or fiddle accents, dynamic peaks engineered for a field of thousands. Less esoteric than club improv — radio-friendly choruses, sing-along anthems and danceable grooves stretched live, optimized for sunset sets and multi-day gatherings.
History
Dave Matthews Band (formed 1991, Charlottesville) brought jam improvisation to arenas and headlined the festival era's biggest crowds. Blues Traveler's 1992 H.O.R.D.E. tour built the touring-festival model, and a later generation — Goose and Billy Strings — revived the mainstage jam draw at Bonnaroo, Lockn' and beyond into the 2020s.
