Tape hiss, room tone, and detuning are kept rather than scrubbed. Diary-like lyrics about crushes, anxiety, and growing up, delivered at conversational volume over low-pressure, laptop-made production.
History
Roots run from R. Stevie Moore's home-taping and Ariel Pink's cassette lo-fi into the laptop and SoundCloud era. The DIY ethos crystallized as a named scene around 2017 when Clairo's GarageBand-made 'Pretty Girl' and Boy Pablo's 'Everytime' went viral. Bandcamp, YouTube, and later TikTok let teenagers release polished-enough music with no studio, making bedrooms the dominant pop workshop.
