Lo-Fi Chill Pop
tagStarted 2009Peak 2010-2018Last big hit still active
Sun-faded, deliberately murky pop: warm analog synths, woozy pitch-bent samples, muffled drum loops and soft vocals wrapped in tape hiss and cassette warble. Everything sounds slightly degraded, nostalgic and summery. Tempos stay relaxed and hypnotic, evoking hazy memory, beach lethargy and a blurry, retro-tinted contentment.
History
Lo-fi chill pop grew from the 2009 'chillwave' wave of bedroom producers reworking 1980s synth-pop through hiss and nostalgia. Washed Out's 'Feel It All Around', Toro y Moi and Neon Indian led the blog-era boom; the aesthetic later fed lo-fi hip-hop study streams and TikTok-era hazy pop, keeping its degraded warmth alive.
