Bedroom Folk Pop

tagStarted 2010Peak 2017-2022Last big hit still active

Acoustic, home-recorded folk-pop: fingerpicked or strummed guitar, close fragile vocals, occasional ukulele, banjo, or piano, captured with audible room tone and tape warmth. Lyrics are confessional and small-scale. It trades synth gloss for the creak of a chair and a breath before the line, an intimate diary set to soft folk chords.

History

This strand carries the four-track folk lineage of home-recorded songwriters into the bedroom-pop era. Alex G's prolific self-released catalog and the hushed confessional folk of Phoebe Bridgers and Adrianne Lenker's Big Thief made fragile, hand-made folk-pop central to indie around 2017-2020. Bandcamp and intimate live clips spread the unvarnished, room-recorded sound.
