Confessional, melodically restrained, emotionally legible: fingerpicked or strummed chords, intimate close-mic'd vocals, sparse arrangements that leave space for words. Storytelling and feeling outrank production gloss; the song lives or dies on its lyric.
History
Crystallized at L.A.'s Troubadour and New York's folk clubs around 1970 as James Taylor, Carole King and Joni Mitchell turned inward, trading protest for the personal. Tape Deck of Tapestry-era confession fed every later wave: 1990s coffeehouse, 2000s acoustic radio pop, and the 2010s indie/Sad Girl revival around boygenius. The mode keeps returning whenever pop tires of maximalism.
