Hushed, melancholy bedroom-leaning pop centered on young women's interior lives: whispered or breathy vocals, soft guitar or muted synth pads, sparse beats and lyrics steeped in heartbreak, anxiety and dissociation. Slow-burning and downcast, it aestheticizes sadness with diaristic specificity, low dynamics and a deliberately fragile, intimate vocal delivery.
History
Emerged mid-2010s as Lana Del Rey's melancholic glamour met bedroom-pop intimacy. Phoebe Bridgers ('Stranger in the Alps', 2017) became its figurehead; Mitski, Soccer Mommy, Clairo and Gracie Abrams spread the hushed, sorrowful aesthetic across indie and pop. TikTok amplified it around 2020-2023, though several artists have publicly resisted the reductive 'sad girl' label.
