Story Pop

Narrative-driven pop where each song tells a self-contained story with characters, scenes and an arc, often a twist or moral. Plain, conversational verses build to a resonant refrain; acoustic guitar or piano keeps the focus on the tale. Closer to short fiction than to mood, it prizes vivid detail and an unmistakable ending.
History
Harry Chapin's 'Cat's in the Cradle' (1974) and Don McLean's 'American Pie' (1971) proved sprawling narratives could top the charts. Suzanne Vega's 'Luka' (1987) showed a story-song could carry hard subject matter. The form descends from folk balladry and survives wherever a writer prizes plot, character and the cautionary or bittersweet final verse.
