Guitar Pop

Pop where the acoustic (or lightly amplified) guitar is the whole engine: loops, percussive body taps, fingerstyle riffs and chord-loop hooks drive the song. Warm, intimate vocals over a single instrument's groove, often built live in front of the mic. Melodic, rhythmic and busker-rooted, it foregrounds a player's hands rather than a band.

History

Grew from the busking and YouTube-cover boom of the late 2000s, where solo players turned a guitar into a one-person band. Ed Sheeran's '+' (2011) and loop-pedal sets made the format a stadium phenomenon; Passenger, Vance Joy and Tom Walker followed. Its riff-as-hook approach kept the acoustic guitar central even as pop leaned electronic.
