Indie Singer-Songwriter Pop

tagStarted 2004Peak 2016-2023Last big hit still active

Singer-songwriter craft filtered through indie production: bedroom or small-studio recordings, reverb-soft guitars or pianos, idiosyncratic phrasing and lyrics dense with specific, literary detail. Hooks exist but stay understated. Emotionally exposed and texturally hazy, it pairs the confessional tradition with lo-fi warmth and a deliberately non-glossy, intimate aesthetic.

History

Grew from 2000s indie-folk into a streaming-era movement as Sufjan Stevens, then Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus (united in boygenius, 2018) fused diary-level candor with indie textures. Their 2017-2021 records and the 2023 boygenius album 'the record' made the hushed, detail-rich singer-songwriter mode central to indie pop's mainstream crossover.
