Hip-hop turned hazy and weightless: reverb-soaked pads, blurred chopped samples, soft tape-saturated drums and acres of empty space. Whether vocal-led and narcotic or instrumental and meditative, the family trades punch and density for atmosphere, mood and texture, the beat dissolving into a fog the listener floats inside rather than rides.

History

Rooted in DJ Shadow's sample-collage instrumentals (1996) and Nujabes' jazz-hop, the family split into vocal cloud rap (Lil B and Clams Casino, c.2009) and the instrumental lo-fi/chillhop study-beat economy that exploded via YouTube livestreams in the 2010s. Ambient instrumental hip-hop runs alongside. All share a texture-first, low-density ethos.
