Abstract beats foreground strange sample choice, off-kilter rhythm, texture collage, and instrumental imagination over conventional song structure. They can support rap, but often feel complete as beat music on their own.

History

This lane grew from instrumental hip-hop, progressive beat tapes, indie labels, and left-field producer culture around Madlib, J Dilla, Flying Lotus, Knxwledge, and related artists. Its influence is enormous across lo-fi, experimental rap, animation-ready beat culture, and post-YouTube instrumental scenes.
