Warm, looping instrumental hip-hop built for studying and sleep: dusty jazz and soul samples, vinyl crackle, tape hiss, gently swung off-grid drums and soft Rhodes chords. Mellow, nostalgic and unhurried, tracks rarely exceed two minutes, designed to dissolve into endless playlists rather than demand attention.
History
Descending from J Dilla's Donuts (2006) and Nujabes' jazz-hop, the modern scene crystallized around 2013 as bedroom producers uploaded short loops to YouTube and Bandcamp. ChilledCow's '24/7 beats to relax/study to' livestream and its animated study girl made the sound a global phenomenon, anchoring a vast streaming economy of anonymous producers.
