Surf / Instrumental Rock

familyStarted 1958Peak 1961-1964Last big hit still active

Reverb-drenched, mostly instrumental rock built on tremolo-picked lead guitar, spring-reverb wash, staccato 'wet' tone, and pounding tom-driven drums. Spans sunny surf, twangy western, cinematic spy themes, eerie horror waltzes, and exotica's tiki-lounge percussion. Melody lives in the guitar, not the voice.

History

Born in Southern California around 1958-1961 as Dick Dale weaponized Fender amps and reverb tanks, while Duane Eddy's twang and The Ventures' clean leads spread it nationally. The British Invasion gutted the first wave by 1965, but it never died: garage, punk, and film (notably Tarantino) sparked revivals from the 1980s onward.
