Raw, primitive surf played with garage-rock crudeness: blown-out fuzz, cheap reverb, snotty energy, and a teenage refusal to polish. Trades virtuosic technique for trashy, two-chord drive and rumbling low-end menace. Sneers where pure surf grins; the link between Link Wray's grit and 60s garage punk.

History

Took root in the early 1960s as countless American teen bands cut crude, reverb-soaked instrumentals influenced by Link Wray and Dick Dale but lacking studio polish. The Trashmen's frantic 'Surfin' Bird' (1963) typified the trashy crossover. The garage-revival scene from the 1980s onward (notably Man or Astro-man?) revived the lo-fi surf aesthetic.
