History

Pioneered by Dick Dale, the 'King of the Surf Guitar,' who worked with Leo Fender to build amps and reverb units loud enough for ballrooms. His left-handed, rapid-fire picking on 'Let's Go Trippin'' (1961) and 'Misirlou' defined the technique. Eddie Bertrand and others codified the style; it directly shaped later instrumental revivalists.
