History

Crystallized in Southern California around 1961 when Dick Dale's residency at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa drew thousands of teen surfers. His staccato, Middle-Eastern-tinged picking on 'Misirlou' set the template; The Chantays and Surfaris followed. The 1965 British Invasion killed the wave; Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction' revived it in 1994.
