Surf's car-obsessed cousin: revving-engine sound effects, drag-strip lyrics, and chugging guitar set to the same reverb-and-twang palette. Often vocal where pure surf was instrumental, with tight harmonies celebrating Deuce Coupes, Stingrays, and street races. Faster, grittier, and gearhead-themed.
History
Exploded in 1963 as Southern California's car culture merged with the surf craze. Songwriter-producers Gary Usher and Roger Christian (often with Brian Wilson) churned out drag-strip anthems; The Rip Chords and Ronny & the Daytonas scored hits. The fad was brief, fading by 1965 as the surf-pop machine moved on, but it produced enduring car classics.
