Shoegaze / Dream Rock

familyStarted 1988Peak 1990-1995Last big hit still active

Guitar music submerged in reverb, delay and feedback, where melody and noise fuse into a textural 'wall of sound.' Vocals sit buried inside the haze as another instrument; tempos drift, distortion blooms into drones, and the pedalboard becomes the lead voice. Hypnotic, immersive, more about envelopment than riffs.

History

Coined dismissively by the UK press circa 1990 for bands who stared at effects pedals onstage, the family crystallized around My Bloody Valentine's 'Loveless' and the Creation/4AD labels. It absorbed dream pop and noise pop, faded under Britpop, then revived in the 2000s as 'nu gaze' and spawned heavier hybrids like blackgaze and ambient-leaning offshoots.
