Drawing from gothic and 4AD textures, it feels weightless and sacred — glossolalic singing, glacial harmonies and shadowy atmosphere conjuring a dreamlike, spectral beauty that hovers between dream pop and dark, cathedral-like grandeur.
History
Defined by 4AD in the 1980s, where Cocteau Twins' effects-laden sound and Elizabeth Fraser's invented-language vocals set the template. This Mortal Coil's 1984 'It'll End in Tears' and Dead Can Dance pushed it toward the sacred and gothic. Projekt Records' Lycia and Love Spirals Downwards carried 'ethereal wave' into the '90s and beyond.
