History
Emerged alongside shoegaze on Creation, 4AD and Rough Trade as a softer, song-forward cousin. Acts like Pale Saints, Mazzy Star, Cranes and Catherine Wheel kept hooks and verse-chorus shapes while bathing them in atmosphere. It bridged shoegaze's wall-of-sound and the gothic-tinged 4AD aesthetic, feeding later indie and the 2000s revival.
