Heavy, cathedral-sized guitar music joining shoegaze's reverb haze to post-rock's dynamic builds. Massive downtuned riffs and crushing low-end alternate with shimmering clean passages, swelling from whispered calm to roaring crescendo. Often instrumental or with buried vocals, it foregrounds tension, scale and slow-motion catharsis over conventional hooks.
History
Rooted in mid-'90s acts like Hum and Failure who fused space-rock heft with shoegaze textures. The 2010s saw a hardcore-to-shoegaze pipeline: Nothing, Whirr and Cloakroom thickened the wall of sound with metallic weight and post-rock structure. Critics tagged it 'heavy shoegaze' or 'post-shoegaze' as it fed directly into the blackgaze surge.
