The 21st-century revival of shoegaze, often pushing the haze brighter, bigger and more digital. It welds the original's reverb-soaked guitar walls to dream pop sweetness, post-punk drive and synth washes — cleaner production, soaring melodies, sometimes danceable propulsion. The pedalboard worship remains; the gloom is frequently traded for euphoria.

History

Began around 2000 with My Vitriol, The Radio Dept. and M83, accelerating after 2003. New York's Asobi Seksu and acts like A Place to Bury Strangers and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart drove a US wave. The British press coined 'nu gaze' mid-decade; by the 2010s DIIV, Whirl and a sprawling Bandcamp underground carried it forward.
