Music stripped to near-stillness: glacial tempos, sparse minimalist arrangements, vast silences between notes, and hushed, mournful vocals. Drums brush rather than strike; single guitar chords hang and decay. Emotionally raw and patient, it draws its weight from restraint and space — sometimes called sadcore for its desolate, slow-burning melancholy.
History
Coalesced in the late 1980s as a reaction to grunge's volume. Codeine's 1990 'Frigid Stars LP' and Red House Painters' early-'90s ballads set the template; Duluth's Low named and defined the movement from 1993. Bedhead, Idaho and Duster expanded it through the decade, and its influence echoes across indie folk and ambient rock today.
