Gospel / Christian / Spiritual Rap
familyStarted 1982Peak 2014-2020Last big hit still active
Faith-centered rap where the pulpit meets the cypher: testimony verses, scripture exposition and worship hooks ride over boom-bap, trap and soul-sampled beats, often wrapped in choir swells, organ, hand-claps and call-and-response. Tone runs from doctrinal density to arena-sized praise, always pointing past the rapper to God.
History
Born when McSweet cut 'The Gospel Beat' (1982) and Stephen Wiley's 'Bible Break' (1985) put rap in the church. Cross Movement and Gospel Gangstaz built a 1990s underground; Reach Records and Lecrae's 'Anomaly' (2014) broke the Billboard 200; Chance the Rapper and Kanye West's gospel era pushed it fully mainstream by 2019-2020.
