Rock built for the back row: huge multi-tracked guitars, layered gang-vocal choruses, soaring lead tenors, and drums mixed like cannon fire. Keyboards add gloss, dynamics swing from hushed verse to explosive hook, and every song aims for a lighters-up, sing-it-back moment scaled to ten thousand seats.

History

Emerged in the mid-1970s as US FM radio and ever-larger touring circuits pushed bands toward bigger, more polished hooks. Acts like Boston, Journey, Foreigner and Styx defined it; the 1980s glam and hair-metal wave plus MTV amplified the formula into a global commercial peak before grunge reset rock's values in the 1990s.
