History
The pejorative arose around 1980 as punk and college-rock partisans attacked the slick, label-driven sound of acts like Foreigner, Journey, REO Speedwagon and Asia. The term stuck to bands whose records were seen as committee-built hit machines; it framed the backlash that grunge would later weaponize against the whole style.
