Arena rock with melody as the absolute priority: hummable vocal lines, rich keyboard textures, restrained but ringing guitar, and big-but-tender choruses sitting between rocker and ballad. Softer-edged and harmony-rich, it leans into yearning mid-tempos and soaring, polished hooks rather than raw aggression. Smooth, warm, anthemic.
History
Crystallized around 1980 as arena bands foregrounded their melodic, keyboard-driven side; the term became a durable genre label, especially in European and Japanese collector scenes. Survivor, Toto, Night Ranger and Mr. Mister typified it, and a dedicated melodic-rock reissue and label industry kept the sound alive long past its US chart peak.
