Blue-collar storytelling scaled to the stadium: ringing guitars, plainspoken everyman lyrics about work, love and small-town struggle, and a big communal chorus you can punch the air to. Earnest and rootsy at the core but produced large — the heartland's grit dressed in arena-rock sheen and a lighters-up payoff.

History

Emerged in the early 1980s where heartland rock's working-class sincerity met arena rock's scale. Bon Jovi's blue-collar narratives, Bryan Adams' rasp and John Cafferty's Springsteen-styled film hits brought the sound to massive audiences mid-decade, and its everyman-anthem template endured well beyond the '80s.
