Moodier, stranger R&B where texture and world-building outrank traditional songcraft. Reverb-soaked vocals, warped synths, glitchy or skeletal drums, and auteur production turn soul into atmosphere. Vocals are often blurred, pitched, or buried in haze; structure dissolves into mood, suite, or slow-burn drift over hooks.
History
Roots reach to late-60s psychedelic soul, but the family crystallized after 2010 as Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, and FKA twigs reframed R&B as headphone art. Internet distribution, cheap DAWs, and labels like Young Turks/4AD fueled a wave of singer-producers prizing atmosphere and self-authored worlds over radio polish, splintering into many overlapping micro-scenes.
