Atmospheric, beat-light R&B where drifting synth pads, reverb tails, field-textured drones and sparse percussion dissolve song structure into mood. Vocals float as another instrument, layered and soaked in delay. Bass is soft and sustained; rhythm is implied more than struck. The effect is weightless, immersive and meditative, closer to soundscape than slow jam.

History

Took shape in the 2010s as electronic and ambient production seeped into R&B, with FKA twigs, James Blake and Sampha pushing voice into spacious, processed sound design. The PB R&B and post-dubstep crossover dissolved firm beats into texture, yielding a hushed, immersive strand that prized atmosphere and space over groove.
