Minimalist R&B

Minimalist R&B uses scarcity as feeling: sparse drums, empty space, sub bass, a few chords, close vocals, repeated phrases and production that lets breath and silence carry tension. It is quieter than big contemporary R&B but often more intense because every detail is exposed. The style can be sensual, lonely, devotional or cold, with the absence around the singer becoming part of the hook.
History
Timbaland and Aaliyah helped normalize spare R&B in the late 1990s, but the 2010s made minimalism a defining language through The xx, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, James Blake, Miguel, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Kelela, SZA and H.E.R. Bedroom production, streaming headphones and trap's skeletal drums all encouraged more negative space. Minimalist R&B became a default mode for late-night intimacy in the smartphone era.
