Experimental R&B

Experimental R&B pushes R&B through abstract production, fractured structure, unusual vocal processing, ambient space, club deconstruction, noise, art-pop and nontraditional songwriting. The voice may be intimate, but the track may refuse ordinary verse-chorus comfort. It differs from general alternative R&B by making risk audible: strange edits, negative space, warped drums or forms that feel closer to installation art than radio.
History
The late-2000s and 2010s alternative R&B wave opened space for artists such as Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, Kelela, FKA twigs, serpentwithfeet, Dawn Richard, Kelsey Lu, Yves Tumor and Autre Ne Veut to stretch the genre. Earlier figures like Prince, Bjork-adjacent art pop, Timbaland and neo-soul experimentation prepared listeners for synthetic intimacy. Experimental R&B became a critical category because R&B artists were making some of the era's most adventurous pop music.
