Hazy, reverb-drenched R&B that drifts in a soft-focus dreamlike fog. Shimmering pads, washed-out guitars, slow tempos, and breathy, blurred vocals create a weightless, half-asleep mood. Borrowing from dream-pop and shoegaze, it dissolves lyrics into atmosphere and melody into mist, prizing a floating, narcotic sense of space over rhythmic drive or sharp hooks.
History
Emerged early 2010s as dream-pop and chillwave bled into R&B. Blood Orange's reverb-soaked productions, Rhye's hushed soul, and acts on labels like Cascine and 4AD foregrounded gauzy texture. Singers like Sampha and Jhené Aiko's softest work, plus the Solange/Dev Hynes axis, made the floating, atmospheric register a defining mood of alternative R&B through the decade.
