R&B built on synthesizers, drum machines, and club-derived production rather than live soul instrumentation. Sub-bass, sidechained pads, vocoder and pitch effects, and post-dubstep rhythms frame the voice. Cooler and more digital than classic soul, it foregrounds programmed texture and space, letting electronic atmosphere carry as much emotion as the melody.

History

Took shape post-2011 as UK post-dubstep producers and singers merged garage, electronica, and soul. James Blake's self-titled debut, SBTRKT with Sampha, and Disclosure's vocal-house crossover pushed R&B into electronic frameworks. Stateside, producers like Cashmere Cat and the PC Music orbit and synth-driven acts kept the lane expanding through the decade.
