Hip-hop drums, 808s and rap cadence fused to radio song-craft: sung or chanted hooks, verse-chorus structure, glossy mixes built for crossover. Spans party-rap singalongs, melodic Auto-Tuned flows, trap hi-hats under bright pop toplines, and rap features grafted onto chart pop, all engineered for mass airplay rather than the underground.

History

Rooted in the Sugarhill Gang's 1979 'Rapper's Delight' bringing rap to the singles chart, pop rap matured through Run-DMC, MC Hammer and Will Smith's clean crossover. The hook-rap era of Nelly and OutKast and the digital-streaming melodic wave of Drake, Post Malone and trap-pop pushed it to the genre's commercial center by the 2010s.
