Pop rap uses rap as mainstream songcraft—clean hooks, radio-friendly beats, catchy choruses, and lyrics designed for broad reach. It often trades underground severity for clarity, charm, and mass participation.
History
From MC Hammer, Young MC, and Will Smith to Nelly, Flo Rida, Drake, and later global chart rap, the lane has repeatedly redefined what rap sounds like at its most public-facing. It is often dismissed by purists and then quietly copied by everyone who wants a hit.
