Novelty Pop Rap

tagStarted 1986Peak 1990-2010Last big hit 2014

Comedic, gimmick-driven rap built around a joke, dance craze or viral hook rather than craft: silly punchlines, exaggerated personas and absurdly catchy chants over bouncy, deliberately goofy pop production. Designed for instant mass appeal and meme-like ubiquity, trading lyrical depth for an irresistible, often ironic singalong that saturates radio and parties.

History

DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince's jokey 'Parents Just Don't Understand' (1988) and 'Weird Al' Yankovic's rap parodies set the template. The dance-craze era of MC Hammer and the Cha Cha Slide, plus the deliberately ridiculous Lonely Island and PSY's 'Gangnam Style' (2012), kept novelty rap a viral chart staple. Cross-listed with Novelty / Comedy / Character Pop.
