Teen Pop Rap
tagStarted 1992Peak 1999-2010Last big hit 2010
Squeaky-clean, youth-targeted rap with bubblegum hooks, bright synths and upbeat tempos, lyrics scrubbed for family radio and tween audiences. The rapping is playful and accessible rather than aggressive, with singalong choruses, often delivered by pre-teen or teenage stars groomed for mainstream pop crossover.
History
Kris Kross's kid-rap smash 'Jump' (1992) opened the lane, proving pre-teen rappers could top the Hot 100. The 2000s pop machine pushed it into full bubblegum: Lil' Bow Wow and Lil' Romeo became tween idols, Soulja Boy's viral dance crossed over in 2007, and Willow Smith's 'Whip My Hair' (2010) capped the run. Cross-listed with Teen Pop and Bubblegum.
