Drake-Lane Pop Rap
tagStarted 2009Peak 2013-2019Last big hit still active
The specific Toronto-bred mode of moody, introspective sing-rap: spacious atmospheric production, dembow and afro-tinged grooves, plush low-end and a conversational flow drifting between bars and crooned melody. Lyrically intimate, often petty or wounded; sonically nocturnal, with quotable hooks built to dominate streaming and radio simultaneously.
History
Drake and producer Noah '40' Shebib forged the template on 'So Far Gone' (2009) and 'Take Care' (2011), defining OVO's hazy, vocal-blurring sound. PartyNextDoor and Bryson Tiller extended it into 'trapsoul,' while Drake's chart reign made the half-sung confessional flow the most imitated pop-rap mode of the 2010s. Cross-listed with Pop-R&B / Soul-Pop.
