Hardcore Punk is punk accelerated and hardened: faster tempos, shorter songs, barked vocals, blunt riffs, stripped production and scenes built around all-ages shows, zines, independent labels and do-it-yourself ethics. It removes much of first-wave punk's glam, pub-rock and art-rock swing in favor of speed, impact and community identity. The family ranges from US hardcore and straight edge to UK82, D-beat, powerviolence, crossover thrash and beatdown, all tied by urgency and physical release.
History
Hardcore formed around 1979-80 in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Boston, New York, San Francisco, Vancouver and the UK, as younger punks made the music faster and more local. Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks, Discharge and Agnostic Front became anchors for different versions of the form. The 1980s network of labels, vans, squats, matinees and xeroxed media became a template for underground music far beyond punk, influencing metal, indie rock, emo, noise rock and alternative culture.
