Hardcore that keeps the speed, gang vocals and breakdowns but threads soaring guitar melody and emotional, often shouted-sung lyrics through it. Ringing octave chords and uplifting or anguished leads ride driving punk tempos; songs build to anthemic, sing-along choruses meant for crowd mic-grabs and pile-ons.
History
Emerged in the late 1990s and early 2000s as bands fused 1980s hardcore drive with bright melodic guitar. Canada's Comeback Kid and a wave of US bands codified it through the 2000s, splitting into a 'positive' branch (Have Heart, Verse, Bane) and a darker, more cinematic, emotionally heavy strain (Defeater), spread by labels like Bridge Nine.
