Youth Crew
Located in 2 routes
Youth Crew is the positive, communal late-1980s hardcore style associated with fast parts, pile-on choruses, mosh breaks, clean production, varsity-style graphics and lyrics about unity, self-respect, scene ethics and straight edge. It sounds less chaotic than early hardcore and more athletic, with tight riffs and shout-along structures made for crowded all-ages rooms. The tone is earnest, motivational and sometimes confrontational in its optimism.
History
The style centered on New York and the Revelation Records orbit, especially Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, Judge, Bold, Side by Side and Chain of Strength. It turned hardcore into a more codified community language: X'd-up hands, crew identity, stage dives, positive slogans and a recognizable visual aesthetic. Youth crew's template returned in 1990s and 2000s revivals because it gave hardcore a highly portable style of energy, ethics and participation.
