Emo / Scene / Pop-Punk-Adjacent Rock
familyStarted 1985Peak 2002-2009Last big hit still active
Confessional, heart-on-sleeve guitar rock built on cracking vocals, diary lyrics about heartbreak and alienation, and dynamics that lurch from whispered verses to chest-out choruses. Spans delicate twinkly arpeggios, glossy radio gloss, breakdown-heavy thrash, and screamed catharsis, all bound by raw emotional disclosure.
History
Grew from mid-1980s DC 'emocore' (Rites of Spring) into 1990s Midwest indie, then exploded commercially in the early-2000s as Saves the Day, Dashboard, and Jimmy Eat World crossed over. The mid-2000s mall-emo/scene wave dominated MySpace and Warped Tour before a 2010s underground revival and an emo-rap mutation kept it alive.
