Screamo is the raw, hardcore-rooted branch of emo built from screamed vocals, frantic tempos, chaotic guitars, blast-like bursts, sudden quiet passages, and lyrics of collapse, politics, intimacy, and desperation. It is usually faster and more abrasive than indie emo, with ragged recording, octave chords, tremolo picking, group eruptions, and dynamics that swing from silence to total rupture. In true screamo, the scream is not decoration; it is the song's grammar.
History
Screamo grew from emocore, post-hardcore, and DIY hardcore in the early 1990s, with Heroin, Antioch Arrow, Portraits of Past, and Mohinder helping define the San Diego/California lineage. The mid-to-late 1990s and early 2000s brought major scenes around Gravity, Ebullition, Level Plane, and other labels, with Saetia, Orchid, Pg. 99, City of Caterpillar, I Hate Myself, Jeromes Dream, Circle Takes the Square, and Envy expanding the style into chaotic, melodic, political, and post-rock directions. Later waves renewed screamo through La Dispute-adjacent post-hardcore, Loma Prieta, Touché Amoré's melodic hardcore crossover, State Faults, and a global DIY revival, but the core remains small-room intensity rather than commercial "screamo" shorthand for any band with screaming.
